Sikh Plymouth Drake councillor quits Labour party saying membership 'no longer compatible' with faith
Plymouth Drake councillor Chaz Singh has resigned from the Labour party.
Singh is Plymouth's only Sikh councillor, and has been popular with constituents since winning his seat in 2011.
In a letter to the party confirming his resignation, Singh said he did not believe he could continue with his membership as it was 'no longer compatible with his faith'.
He has said he will continue to serve the Drake ward as an independent.
Councillor Singh said he has received an outpouring of support following the announcement.
However, Plymouth MP Luke Pollard has called on the councillor to step down and trigger a by-election in the Labour-held council.
The resignation does not affect Labour's overall majority in the council.
