M5 motorway closed near Weston-super-Mare after caravan overturns in serious crash

The M5 motorway is closed northbound near Weston-super-Mare after a crash caused a caravan to overturn.

Emergency services closed the carriageway between junction 22 for Burnham-on-Sea and junction 21 for Weston-super-Mare after the crash happened around midday.

The incident is reported to have involved a 4x4 with an attached caravan, which has overturned on the northbound side of the motorway.

Highways England said all three lanes are closed, while traffic on the southbound side was also temporarily held to allow an air ambulance to land at the scene.

Motorists are advised to consider taking alternative routes while the M5 remains closed.

Drivers heading northbound via the motorway are advised to follow the A38 and A370 prior to rejoining the M5 at junction 21.

The air ambulance has now left the scene. Traffic held on the southbound side of the carriageway to allow for the ambulance to take-off has now been released.

The M5 northbound has partially re-opened following the crash earlier today.

Cameras show traffic officers remain at the scene, where at least one lane remains closed.
