If you're in Plymouth over the next few weeks and you happen to come across a brightly-coloured elephant, don't be alarmed.

It's all part of an art project based on the popular children's character Elmer - and it's set to raise much needed funds for St Luke's Hospice.

Each figure features a one-off design by a local artist, and over the next ten weeks they will form a trail around the city before being auctioned off.

The project is inspired by the much-loved story of Elmer the patchwork elephant, written 30 years ago by Devon-born author David McKee.

There is a serious message here too - St Luke's is on a mission to demystify death and teach youngsters about the important work being done by hospices.

The trail begins on Monday, and at the end of the summer the figures will be auctioned to raise money for the charity.
