Bristol's famous St Pauls Carnival has announced its theme for 2019 which will pay tribute to the city's Windrush generation.

'Our journey' will celebrate those who came together in Bristol and set-up organisations and groups to support one another in their new lives in the UK.

In 2018 the carnival was a huge success after a three-year absence and received a Bristol Life award for event of the year.

This year it will showcase the challenges faced by the Windrush generation who came over to Bristol from the 1940s.

The theme will reflect issues such as racism and inequality while highlighting the contribution made by the generation to society - including bringing Caribbean music, food, traditions and dance to Bristol.

In 2018 the carnival celebrated its 50th anniversary and focused on community engagement to change negative perceptions built up over previous years.

Around 100,000 people attended the celebrations last year, which also featured an education programme to involve schools across the city as well as local businesses.

LaToyah McAllister-Jones, this year's executive director, said:

She said, "Through this theme, people can explore their own life journeys, backgrounds and heritage and perhaps even more importantly, those of other people's."
