Police officers were forced to step in after a free burger giveaway in Bristol drew hundreds of hungry people.

Officers intervened and were reportedly seen dishing out free burgers after members of the crowd at College Green, in central Bristol, started pushing and shoving.

Hundreds of people attended the giveaway on Wednesday (April 17), which was organised by Deliveroo to celebrate the app's fourth anniversary.

But the event was marred by some unsavoury scenes as punters - desperate to get their hands on a free burger - swarmed staff and started pushing.

Police officers later attended to help manage the crowds, and were seen assisting staff by handing out free burgers.

In a statement issued after the event, a Deliveroo spokesperson said the company "didn't expect" such a large turnout.
