Organ donation opt-out law which assumes consent set to pass in England

The Act will be called Max and Keira's Law, partly named after Keira Ball Credit:

A proposed new law on organ donation, named after West-Country girl Keira Ball, is being discussed by politicians for the last time today.

Under the new system, consent will be presumed unless people have opted out. Currently, there is a voluntary opt-in scheme.

It has the backing from all major parties and is due to come into effect next year.

The Act will be called Max and Keira's Law, partly named after Keira Ball, who was nine when she died in a car crash on the North Devon Link Road in 2017.

Her organs have saved the lives of four people. One of those was Max, a boy who received Keira's heart.

Government ministers say the change in the rules in England could save up to 700 lives a year by increasing the number of organs available.
