Somerset shoe retailer Clarks has announced it will close its Street factory.

The firm says the manufacturing unit in Street will shut after failing to reach production and cost targets.

While the headquarters will remain, the move has put up to 49 jobs at risk - with workers currently under consultation.

A spokesperson for Clarks, which was founded in Street nearly 200 years ago, said: “At Clarks, we are constantly evaluating the way we do business, keeping the ever-changing retail landscape and our customers’ needs front of mind.

“In 2017, we announced Morelight, a pilot of our manufacturing concept in Street."

“We have a strong duty of care to all our employees and will ensure they are actively supported throughout the process.”
