Devon Tory MP faces deselection campaign for opposing Brexit
The Totnes MP Sarah Wollaston is being targetted for deselection by campaigners opposed to her views on Brexit. The former GP originally backed leaving the EU but changed her mind over the claims it would result in a £350 million boost for the NHS.
Her constituents in Totnes have been targetted with Facebook messages from the Leave.EU campaign, describing her as “Slippery Sarah”. They're being urged to join the local Conservative association and then deselect her. It's resulted in a jump in applications for membership.
Dr Wollaston, who was first elected as Totnes MP in 2010, has come out fighting. She's been backed by fellow Tory remain MPs including Plymouth's Johnny Mercer.
