Ashton Gate Stadium reveals plans to build new £100m sporting venue

Plans have been revealed for a new south Bristol sports stadium which could be built next to Ashton Gate.

The £100 million development includes a 4000-capacity home for Bristol's basketball team the Flyers, who sold out every home game last season.

Bristol Flyers head coach Andreas Kapoulas said the stadium would secure the club's long-term future.

If successful, the area would also see more housing built on the land adjacent to the stadium, a multi-storey car park and two hotels.

Proposed by Ashton Gate Ltd – the sister company to Bristol Sport – it is hoped the venue will also be used for other community sports.

Speaking of the proposed development, Ashton Gate chairman Martin Griffiths said "this is the chance to turn the page".

"The new Sports and Convention Centre will provide much needed space for the growth of a broad range of community based sports, run by our group of charities based at Ashton Gate.

“It is right that any proposed development must take account of the current housing crisis facing our city and homes have been factored into the plans."
