Plans to make St Pauls Carnival self-funding

100,000 people are estimated to have been at the carival

After a successful and very busy 50th anniversary of St Pauls Carnival this weekend organisers say they aim to make it self-funding within the next five years.

Around a hundred thousand people turned out on Saturday to watch the parade and celebrate the city's African Carribean culture.

The event costs £400,000 to put on and half of that money comes from the council. Over the last few years there's been a lot of doubt surrounding the event but after a four year break the event was back on the Bristol calendar.

It may have been the sunshine, or the fact that the carnival has become the largest of it's kind in the country but a huge crowd turned out to watch the festivities.

22 local schools took part, with half of the St Pauls community getting involved in some way.
