The Bristol man who 'doesn't exist'

A man from Bristol says he lived in fear of being deported after being told he didn't exist in this country - despite living here legally for more than 50 years.

Winston Walker's problems started when he applied for a provisional driving licence ten years ago. His documents kept being returned. So he went to his MP. He was told he didn't exist in this country.

The 53-year-old, who lives in Bristol, is part of the Windrush generation. People from Commonwealth Countries were invited here to help rebuild post-war Britain.

Winston arrived on his father's passport in 1967 when he was 18 months old. He's been schooled here and worked here but never owned a passport.

Because he had no documents proving his legal right to live in Britain - Winston constantly feared he'd be deported.

Since the Windrush scandal came to light the Home Office has been working round the clock to help more than a thousand people, who've contacted their helpline. But there could be many more affected.

Winston Walker's case is now being dealt with by the Home Office. He says he's now looking forward to becoming a British Citizen so he can officially belong to the only country he knows.
