There are fears that two more naval flagships could be leaving Devonport for good under further cuts by the Ministry of Defence.

It has been reported HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark could be taken out of service.

If confirmed, this would mean the loss of all three of the Royal Navy's assault ships.

HMS Bulwark and HMS Albion are two of the most formidable ships in the Royal Navy's fleet with a combined weight of 40,000 tonnes.

The vessels have a combined 26 years of service.

The amphibious warships are used to land and support ground forces, primarily Royal Marines, on enemy territory.

Each of the Plymouth-based ships can carry more than 350 troops around the world.

HMS Bulwark rescued 400 migrants off the coast of Libya in 2015.

Plymouth-based HMS Ocean is also due to be scrapped next year.

The Navy's flagship is currently delivering aid to people affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Plymouth MPs Jonny Mercer and Luke Pollard say they would fight any plans that would weaken the city's naval fleet.
