A four-year-old boy has died in hospital after being found in a swimming pool at Knapp House Activity Centre in Bideford on Monday 28 August, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

The boy, from Weymouth, had been reported missing at Knapp House Activity Centre in Bideford yesterday afternoon.

The child was attending a weekend organised by Narcotics Anonymous for its members and their families.

He was taken to hospital but doctors were unable to save him.

Police were alerted to the boy being missing on Monday 28 August at 2.55pm. They say the circumstances surrounding the death remain "unexplained".

In a statement, Devon Narcotics Anonymous Campout Committee, who arranged the weekend, said something had "gone horrifically wrong" which resulted in the boy drowning at the site.

It had been the sixth year the week-long summer holiday campout had taken place.

In a statement, directors at Knapp House Ltd said the tragedy occurred while the group had 'self-supervised' recreational use of the pool - which was not part of the activity programme it provided.
