A mass power outage in Dorchester and Weymouth caused considerable disruption earlier today.

The power went out at around 12pm and reports suggest that up to 8,000 homes were affected.

The National Grid said that there had been a technical fault at a substation. The power was restored just after 1.30pm.

South West Train services were at a standstill between Dorchester South and Weymouth due to power supply failure in the area but are now up and running.

A number of traffic signals were also affected by the outage. One police officer advised people to use the Highway Code.
