Bristol Primary School could change its name

A school in Bristol is asking pupils, parents and the local community to take part in a consultation about whether it should change its name.

Colston's Primary School in Cotham is asking those who are interested to attend information events and, from 3 July, fill out an online survey stating if they think the change should go ahead.

According to the school, questions over its name have been raised to "varying degrees" since it became a state primary in 1947. But it follows music and arts venue Colston Hall announcing plans to rename, in April this year.

It comes after campaign groups in Bristol have raised concerns about buildings and institutions which have taken Edward Colston's name, an eighteenth century merchant who traded slaves.

In 2012 when Colston's Primary became an academy the decision was made to keep the name "while monitoring the children's education around Edward Colston."

Now though, the future of the school's identity is in the hands of those who attend and send their children there. The consultation will be open until October 2017 and celebrations will be held, regardless of the outcome, to mark the school's 70th birthday.

How can you make your view known?

  • Pupils: will attend and event on 13 July and will complete a specially tailored survey

How will the final decision be made?

  • Feedback from events and the survey will collated and considered by governors.

  • The co-operative forum reps summary representations for pupils, staff, parents and the wider community to governors will also be considered.

  • Governors will call a meeting at the beginning of term two to process the feedback before making a final decision.
