Residents of three tower blocks at Devonport in Plymouth have been told that their external cladding has the worst fire safety rating under new government guidelines.

Today, panels of cladding were being removed on buildings that will also have sprinkler systems fitted after a review under new Government safety guidance.

The new rating system was ordered following the Grenfell Tower disaster in West London. The company that manages the Plymouth blocks says their system is different to the one at Grenfell.

A statement issued by Plymouth Community Homes who maintain the towers said a panel from the outer layer of the cladding had been tested and received the lowest rating for fire safety. Although they were keen to stress a panel from the inner layer did receive the highest safety rating.

Residents have been informed of the changes, including that new heat detectors will be installed to accompany the existing smoke alarms. Plymouth Community Homes are working closely with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.
