Gary Johnson signs new two-year contract at Cheltenham Town

Cheltenham Town manager Gary Johnson has signed a new two-year contract at the club.

The former Bristol City and Yeovil manager said he was excited about building up the club after they kept their place in the Football League.

Johnson missed the end of the League Two season after undergoing heart surgery in March.

At the age of 61 Johnson's future in football could have been in doubt after illness kept him out of the game for a month and a half.

But he said he is now fine after receiving treatment at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Southmead Hospital.

Johnson said he had realised it was not time to retire or leave football because he still had the appetite to achieve big things with Cheltenham.

To celebrate the new deal Johnson spent the morning handing out awards to Cheltenham fans who had won a competition.

The prizes for 8-year-old Ollie and 18-year-old Connor include the chance to sit on the bench with Johnson during the side's pre-season games.
