Murder investigation after man killed in assault

Wiltshire Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder in Chippenham.

Officers were called to a report of an assault in the street on London Road at 12.20am today, 10 May 2017. They found a 38-year-old man from the town lying on the ground with significant injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Within an hour, police located and arrested a 22-year-old man from Chippenham. He is being held in custody in Melksham.

London Road has been closed from the junction with Avenue La Fleche and Blackcross to allow crime scene investigators to carry out a detailed investigation. The road is likely to remain closed for the rest of the day.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have seen an assault in the area of London Road around midnight. They also want to know if anyone saw or heard any suspicious behaviour before this as they might have information that proves vital to the case.
