Plans for a multimillion-pound re-development of Drake's Island in Plymouth have been approved.

The firm behind the idea wants to spend £10m converting the old fortifications on the island into a luxury hotel.

The iconic six-acre island has been vacant for more than 20 years.

Owners Rotolok have been trying to get permission for a hotel resort for most of that time.

In recent years their plans have been held up by concerns about a colony of birds which roost there.

But today there was a major breakthrough for the project, after the RSPB dropped part of its objections.
