The NSPCC says around 1 in 5 women will develop a mental health problem either during pregnancy or after giving birth.

The South West has one of the lowest maternity mental healthcare referral rates in the country. In the meantime charities are stepping in to fill the gap.

The NSPCC are providing 'Pregnancy in Mind' classes to help women through the ups and downs of motherhood by bringing them together to talk about anxiety and depression.

The charity is running classes in Swindon and Tidworth as part of a 4 year trial - almost 60 families have been involved in Swindon alone.

At this session, they were discussing why some people may not seek the support they need:

Group leader, Catherine Albert, says the children's charity are getting involved with trying to help improve the mental health of women as it has an impact on the whole family.

There is no equivalent class available on the NHS in Wiltshire, although individual support is now offered.

For the mothers who do come the NSPCC classes, it's coming together that is one of the most valuable aspects.
