120 firefighters tackle leisure centre fire

Riverside Leisure Centre remains closed

The Riverside Leisure Centre was evacuated when a fire broke out at yesterday afternoon. It's one of Exeter's most well known buildings.

The fire quickly spread through the roof space. The fire brigade punched holes in the roof and filled the space with gas to stop the flames from spreading.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said 120 firefighters were involved in tackling the blaze.

Witnesses say smoke first appeared near the Sauna on the first floor. No one was seriously hurt, but one person had to be treated for the effects of breathing in smoke, and another had minor burns. More than fifty people were sent to a local cafe.

It's not yet clear how much damage has been caused or when the centre will reopen. The fire has been mostly put out over night. One pump is still there.
