'Be prepared' as bad weather hits the West Country

People are being urged to make sure they're prepared for bad weather after the MET Office warned incoming storm-like weather will bring strong winds and heavy rain to the South West later today (Thursday) and during Friday.

Our reporter Bob Cruwys was by the railway tracks at Dawlish and sent back this footage:

The latest information from the MET Office and the Environment Agency is for the wettest weather to move across the region on Thursday, with the highest winds expected on Friday.

  • In Torquay the seafront is closed in both directions due to waves coming over the sea wall.

  • On the trains there's disruption to CrossCountry services due to winds between Exeter and Plymouth.

  • Buses are replacing trains between Liskeard and Looe due to flooding on the line.

  • There were 1500 homes without power in Devon earlier and 300 in Cornwall.

Between 10 and 40mm of rain are expected to fall today (02/02), with gale force winds expected in the afternoon.

On Friday the winds will be at their strongest across the Isles of Scilly and the southern coasts, with gusts up to 70mph.

There's likely to be travel disruption particularly on exposed bridges and high sided vehicles, as well as potential disruption to air and ferry travel.

There is also the risk of damage to trees and potential disruption to power supplies, as well as the risk of injury from flying debris.

Strong winds appear to have already brought down power lines in Hayle, this footage shows sparks flying scarily close to the houses on one street:

The strong winds are likely to be accompanied by large waves which may make beaches, sea walls, piers and promenades dangerous.

Neither the Council nor the Environment Agency have to provide sandbags and so anyone whose property is prone to flooding should make sure they have some ready to protect their home or business should they need to.

People are also being encouraged to check in on vulnerable neighbours in case they need help. Residents are also advised to check that their drains are clear of leaves and blockages.
