Bristol playground inspires new musical
An adventure playground which has inspired generations of children in Bristol is now the basis of a new musical.
The park in Lockleaze, known as The Vench, was opened in the 1970s - way before health and safety guidelines.
It brought a group of children together and helped shape their lives. Now their story will be on stage at the Bristol Old Vic.
The Bristol playground was originally designed by children and made by children.
One 7 year old boy who continues to have fond memories of this playground in Lockleaze that shaped his life.
This playground is now the inspiration for a new musical at the Bristol Old Vic called Junkyard. So called because back in the 70s it was built from scrap - where children would often beg, borrow and steal materials from the Lockleaze estate.
Today the playground looks very different. But but for the actors, who have just started rehearsals, it was a chance to discover their inner child and to learn first hand why it was so special for a generation of children.
