A day to remember for Argyle fans
Plymouth Argyle and their fans are anticipating a famous FA Cup third round replay after securing a goalless draw at Liverpool this afternoon. Nearly nine thousand fans made the trip to Anfield and saw their side deny the Premiership stars. Our sports correspondent Matthias Kurth watched the game unfold at Anfield:
300 miles and 68 places in the football pyramid separate Plymouth and Liverpool but there was no lack of excitement or belief amongst the visiting faithful. As many fans made the trip to Anfield as do to Home Park most weekends. Playing in front of a TV audience of millions and sell-out 55,000 crowd.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp opted for a second string side including 5 teenagers but it was red wave after red wave in the first half.
Derek Adam's tactic seemed to be sit back and be patient but that brought precious few chances to trouble the home goal. Origi had the ball in the net but the referee decided he'd done so illegally. Then Gary Miller almost put into his own net. But a goalless first half gave Plymouth hope and Graham Carey's effort from distance at least relieved some pressure.
For some the early start was beginning to tell but Jake Jervis gave them something to cheer. No doubt as to the dominant team but when Luke McCormick stooped to save in injury time Plymouth's job was done and thoughts of another battle in 10 days time could begin.
