Woman seriously injured after being hit by car outside Plymouth shopping centre

An 18 year-old woman is in hospital with serious injuries after being trapped on railings when she was struck by a car close to Drake Circus shopping centre in Plymouth.

Fire crews were called in to free the woman after the crash which happened at around 6.30am just yards from the police station on Charles Street. Roads in the area were cordoned off until mid-morning, resulted in heavy traffic and severe delays to bus services

The 27 year-old driver of a BMW has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving. The car was taken away from the scene after being left facing down the wrong side of the road.
