Tipper truck firm owner found guilty of manslaughter after Bath crash

The owner of the truck firm involved in the fatal tipper truck crash in Bath last year has been found guilty of manslaughter - along with a mechanic at the company.

Mitzi Steady, Stephen Vaughan, Robert Parker and Philip Allen were all killed in the crash.

Matthew Gordon (owner) and Peter Wood (mechanic) have been found guilty of the manslaughter of all four people killed in the crash - as a result of gross negligence.

Driver Phillip Potter has been cleared of all charges.

Matthew Gordon and Phillip Potter have been found not guilty of the following charges:

  • the deaths of Mitzi Steady, Stephen Vaughan, Robert Parker and Philip Allen by dangerous driving.

  • the deaths of Mitzi Steady, Stephen Vaughan, Robert Parker and Philip Allen by careless driving.

  • seriously injuring Margaret Rogers (Mitzi's grandmother) by dangerous driving.

  • seriously injuring Karla Brennan by dangerous driving.

Gordon and Wood will be sentenced on January 27th.

The horror crash happened after the 32-tonne truck careered down a notoriously steep hill in Bath on Monday 9 February 2015.

As the tipper truck swerved from side to side down the steep hill, Mitzi Steady - from Bath - was crossing the road with her grandmother, Margaret Rogers.

They were hit and the four year old was killed instantly. Her grandmother and another woman were both injured.

The truck hit a number of other vehicles before toppling over onto a Volvo, killing the three men inside.

They were businessman Robert Parker aged 59 from Cwmbran, Western Power director Philip Allan aged 52 from Swansea and their driver Stephen Vaughan aged 34, also from Swansea.
