It's Carnival season! Here's all you need to know

It's Carnival season in Somerset where parades, fireworks and celebrations are the name of the game.

Many consider the Somerset Carnivals the highlight of the year, and one of the most exciting displays of amateur entertainment anywhere in the world.

The processions of illuminated floats are part of an ancient tradition, which stretches back as far as the 1600s when many parts of Somerset commemorated the Gunpowder plot.

So here's all you need to know about where you can catch one of these amazing spectacles.

The parade features more than 100 Carnival floats each with lights, coloured costumes and special effects.

  • Starts: 7:30pm

The Illuminated Carnival at Weston-super-Mare is one of the largest in the world and takes in the whole town.

  • Time: 7:15-10pm

The fourth stop on the Guy Fawkes Carnival circuit is North Petherton with many large and colourful floats taking part.

  • Time: 7-10pm

Midsomer Norton Illuminated Carnival is the largest community event in the Somer Valley. It's one of the largest charity fund raisers in the area – raising thousands of pounds for local charities, community groups and good causes.

  • Start: 7.30pm

Build up to the Shepton Mallet carnival starts two days before the procession

  • Time: 7.30-10pm

The tableau floats depict scenes with all the performers in a fixed pose effectively creating a living picture.

  • 7-10pm

People say Glastonbury, the last on the circuit, is one of the most beautiful places to watch the procession as the lights reflect from the windows of the many crystal shops with line the high street.
