Halliwell found guilty of Becky Godden's murder
Convicted murderer Christopher Halliwell has been found guilty of a second killing.
A jury found the 52 year old former taxi driver guilty of the murder of Swindon woman Becky Godden in 2003.
He was already serving a life sentence for stabbing Sian O’Callaghan to death five years ago.
It took a jury just under 3 hours to find him guilty at Bristol Crown Court
He had denied the charge in court, even though the jury heard that he confessed to detectives that he had killed Becky.
He was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping Sian, a 22 year old office worker in March 2011. He admitted he had murdered her and told police he had killed before. He even took detectives to the remote field where he had buried Becky years earlier. But when he received legal advice, he offered ‘no comment’ answers and then denied the Becky murder charge.
And he created legal history - defending himself in court in the two-week trial. He told the jury he knew where Becky’s remains were because he used to drive a pair of drug dealers around Swindon. It was they who buried Becky, he said. Although he refused to name these mysterious men.
The jury did not believe his story and convicted him of Becky’s murder. He'll be sentenced on Friday 19th September.
