A minicab driver accused of murdering Swindon woman Becky Godden has told the senior investigating officer “it was a pleasure ruining your career”.

Christopher Halliwell, accused of killing Becky Godden, is conducting his own defence – and made the statement while cross-examining the former policeman.

Steve Fulcher, was investigating the murder of Sian O’Callaghan when Christopher Halliwell appeared to confess to another killing.

Bristol Crown Court heard how the father-of-three asked Mr Fulcher if he wanted “another one” before directing police to a field, and accurately pacing out steps to a gravesite.

Police investigations later found the body of Becky Godden, who disappeared from Swindon in 2003. Halliwell denies killing the 20-year-old.

Cross-examining Mr Fulcher, Halliwell – who is currently serving a life sentence after admitting the murder of Sian O’Callaghan in 2011 – clarified a number of facts about his statement.

But, shortly before finishing his examination he told the former Detective Inspector, it “had been a pleasure ruining your career”.

Giving evidence, Det Supt Fulcher replayed the conversation to the court, where he said Halliwell had admitted killing another woman.

He said he had stopped a car driving him to the station as Halliwell had indicated he wanted to talk there and then.

He told the court Halliwell had questioned what was wrong with him - before adding, “Normal people don’t go around killing each other.”

Mr Fulcher said he had asked Halliwell if he knew where he could take them to where he had buried the woman, to which he had replied “to the exact spot”.

After directing the police to a cross roads near Eastleach, Halliwell took Mr Fulcher over a wall, where he searched for a marking, and began pacing to a spot.

Mr Fulcher told the court Halliwell had then put “one foot in front of another” until he reached a certain spot and stopped.

Following police investigations Becky’s body was found just 10 metres away.

When asked by Mr Fulher how he had allegedly killed Becky, he replied “I strangled her”.

coDuring cross-examination Mr Fulcher told the court he believed Halliwell’s confusion over when he had allegedly killed Becky, and over the depth of the grave site, led him to “conclude there were other victims”.

Halliwell denies killing the 20-year-old, the trial continues.
