Royal Marine arrested in Somerset on suspicion of terrorism offences named as Ciaran Maxwell

A Royal Marine arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences in Somerset has been named as 30-year-old Ciaran Maxwell .

He was arrested as part of an investigation into Northern Ireland-related terrorism yesterday.

Although he was arrested in Somerset the focus of the police investigation has been in Devon.

Police in full forensic gear are continuing to search a house and woodland near Exminster near Exeter.

The arrest is linked to the discovery earlier this year of two major arsenals of weapons found in Northern Ireland.

The arms included pipe bombs, ammunition, an armour-piercing improvised rocket, anti personnel mines and bomb making components.
