Elderly pair die after their car plunges into lake

An elderly man and woman have died after their car plunged 20ft into a lake and overturned.

A desperate rescue mission was launched by locals and emergency services at Hooe Lake as they raced into the water to save the pair.

It's thought the car drove over the edge of the road into the estuary.

Although rescuers were able to get both out, they sadly died.

The 75-year-old man was initially freed from the car by emergency services, who then gave him CPR before he was taken to Derriford Hospital.

The woman was also freed but she died at the scene.

Superintendent Dave Thorne told us:

They're now appealing for witnesses to the incident and say they are keeping an open mind.
