Protest planned against job losses as Council admits it has millions in reserves

A protest is being planned this weekend against the loss of 1,000 jobs at Bristol City Council - as the authority's admitted having more than a £100million in reserves.

Mayor Marvin Rees - who earlier this week said he faced a budget gap of £29 million this year - says he is now reviewing the level of reserves but would only use the money as "a last resort".

The Bristol People's Assembly has organised what it describes as an emergency protest against cuts in central government funding on Saturday.

The group said it was demanding the city's leadership "take a strong stand in calling out central government on these devastating cuts".

The cuts come as the authority aims to save another £29 million from its budget this year.

Yesterday the Green Party and UNISON criticised central government for reductions in council funding which they say have left the council with little choice.
