Fifty years after the arrival of the very first lions at Longleat in Wiltshire, today’s big cats have been given more freedom to roam.

Thanks to a new fence around their paddock and enclosures, the 28 strong super pride can now choose to stay outside at night instead of being locked indoors.

It's part of an investment programme at the park involving new fencing for most of the carnivores, including the lions, tigers, wolves and cheetahs.More than 4km of fence line is due to be replaced, along with upgrades to housing and gates. The total cost of the project is likely to be in excess of £1.5m.
