Don't buy Dory say Plymouth's aquarium
Plymouth's National Marine Aquarium is warning of the implications of keeping tropical fish as pets. It comes ahead of the release of the Pixar movie Finding Dory. >Experts say a huge increase in the number of people buying clown fish after Finding Nemo had a negative impact on the population. >They fear the same could happen for Regal Tangs.
Opening to the public, ahead of the film's official UK release on 29 July, an exhibition will be dedicated to the Dory fish species. >However, the exhibition won't just offer visitors the opportunity to marvel at the Regal Tangs colourful exterior, it will also inform Aquarium-goers of the implications of keeping tropical fish as pets.
Fish are the third most popular animal to keep as pets in the UK, following dogs (24%) and cats (17%), with indoor and outdoor fish keeping accounting for 14% of the pet population in 2015. >This trend, coupled with the spike in keeping Clown Fish as pets - following the release of Finding Nemo in 2003 - is a cause for concern for the Aquarium.
