Town recovers after residents are showered in hot pennies in traditional festival

From the burning tar-barrels of Ottery St Mary, to the Orange Racing through Totnes, to Obby Oss day in Cornwall - the West Country has more than its fair share of unusual traditions on the streets.

But maybe this one in Honiton is the weirdest of the lot!

Hundreds of children turned out for the annual shower of pennies from the town's pubs.

The tradition dates back to 1221 and a rather morbid past when the affluent took pleasure in heating pennies up before throwing them at peasants to watch them struggle to pick them up.

Nowadays its all a bit less serious than that...but you may notice it still looks like a bit of a health hazard.

Everyone is at least allowed to keep the money they have picked up at the end of the day.

At least at the end of the day you can go home with fuller pockets. Credit: ITV News
