Gloucester couple celebrate unexpected growth of banana plant in their garden
After twenty years of trying a Gloucester couple have finally succeeded in persuading a banana plant in their garden to produce fruit.
Nida Mordaunt brought back a tiny sapling from the Philippines two decades ago. It grew, but has only now produced fruit in her garden.
Her husband Patrick said he was shocked when his wife can running in to tell him there was a flower on the banana plant.
Bananas usually struggle to get anywhere growing in the UK because they thrive in warmer conditions. They do however enjoy wet weather, so recent humid and rainy conditions may be helping them grow.
The couple say they will have a banana party if the fruit ripens.
