Bristol golfer Chris Wood pulls out of the Open Championship after failing to overcome injury
Bristol golfer Chris Wood has pulled out of the Open Championship at Royal Troon in Scotland after failing to overcome a neck injury.
Wood teed off earlier today but withdrew from the tournament on the 12th hole of his first round at 3 over par.
The 28-year-old had been on good form going into the Open after winning the BMW PGA Championship in May.
Wood has a special affinity with the Open after breaking through as an amateur in the tournament in 2008.
He finished tied for fifth that year and went two places better a year later securing third place - his best major result to date.
But after pulling out of last week's Scottish Open the world number 22 couldn't get through the first round today and will have to wait another year to take home Major honours on home soil.
