Bristol Pride - a fun day with an important message

More than 5,000 people paraded through Bristol today as part of the region's largest pride event. Bristol Pride celebrates people from the gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual community - known as LGBT.

It's the region's largest Pride event - a colourful day and a celebration. But this has been a dark year for the lesbian, gay, trans and bisexual community. Some said this year's event was more important after the massacre of 50 gay people at a nightclub in Florida last month.

Police were at the event to spread the message that they take hate crimes against LGBT people very seriously, as Dep Ch Con Gareth Morgan explained:

Although today was the big parade, other Pride events are taking place across the whole weekend.
