Somme shrouds: Final day and ceremony information

Today is the final day for members of the public to view the Shrouds of the Somme installation at Northernhay Gardens in Exeter.

More than 40,000 people have already visited what is said to be the world's biggest art project. It features 19,240 hand-stitched figures, one for each allied soldier who fell on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

The work is the culmination of three years' work by Somerset artist Rob Heard.

What is happening today?

  • 7:30am - 21:00 : Public viewing open

Closing ceremony details

All members of the public are welcome at the closing ceremony from 21:00 - 21:30 (approximate timings).

  • 21:00 - Bugler to sound

  • Last 10 names of the fallen read out

  • Speeches, prayers and poems

  • Last Post to be played

  • 21:13 - Two minute silence

  • Acoustic version of The Keeper to be played

What happens to the figures now?

Each hand-made figure can be bought with all profits donated to The Exeter Foundation and SSAFA.
