The Euro 2016 Football Championships will get underway imminently England manager Roy Hodgson is the man tasked with finally ending a 50 year wait to win a major competition.
The 68-year-old is nearing the end of his long career and, depending on just how England fare, could call it quits when his current contract expires this summer.
But many moons ago, and long before he landed the top job, Hodgson's first role in English football was at Bristol City.
It was a short-lived and inglorious chapter - few could have predicted how Hodgson's stock and fortunes would rise over the next four decades.
Hodgson arrived at Ashton Gate in 1980 as assistant manager to Bob Houghton. Two relegations later and two years later, Hodgson was handed the reins and was put in charge.
But the club was in free fall and had to sell off its best players. Bankruptcy and a third consecutive relegation were just around the corner...
After just four unsuccessful months, he was sacked.
Roy Hodgson's career since Bristol City has taken him to the top - with eyes closely watching his management skills during Euro 2016 over the next few weeks.
