Nuclear submarine re-opens after refit

Britain's first and only nuclear-powered museum submarine has re-opened after renovation.

The Cold War submarine HMS Courageous is the only one of its kind. It is preserved afloat in Devonport Naval Base to tell the story of naval nuclear power.

HMS Courageous was launched in 1970 and in service for 22 years, and served worldwide. It was the first submarine to trial, embark and fire Sub Harpoon - a revolutionary weapon for the submarine service and the Royal Navy.

One of the ship's former crew remembers its role.

In the past 14 years, the vessel has become the UK’s first and only nuclear-powered museum in the hands of a band of volunteers, many of them former submariners.

They have not only renovated her but also guided more than 300,000 visitors round the fascinating interior.
