Cornwall Council votes to oppose government's forced academy plans

Members of Cornwall Council have voted to oppose Government plans to force all schools in the county to become academies.

95 members of the Council voted for a motion opposing the Government's plans and calling on the Secretary of State for Education to allow Cornwall's schools and parents to decide themselves if they wanted to remain within the local authority or become academies.

Proposing the Motion Labour Councillor Tim Dwelly said forced academisation was widely opposed by parents and educational professionals:

The Council says it will now be writing to the Secretary of State for Education to ask that Cornwall’s schools are given the powers to make their own decisions rather than being forced to become academies.
