Plymouth Blitz victims remembered on 75th anniversary
The victims of the bombing which caused the greatest loss of civilian life during the Plymouth Blitz have been remembered at a service today.
Seventy six people were killed when the shelter at Portland Square suffered a direct hit around midnight, on this day in 1941.
To mark it's 75th anniversary Plymouth University staff, students and members of the public gathered at the main campus, just metres from where the shelter was.
Survivors including 86-year-old Barbara Mills, who lost her mother, father, sister and grandfather in the blast, attended the service and laid tributes.
Oliver Colville MP, Lord Mayor Councillor Dr Jon Mahony, members of the local clergy and armed forces cadets also attended.
There were a number of floral and verbal tributes too, including from Plymouth University Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simon Payne, and Executive Officers from Plymouth University's Students' Union.
