A 21-year-old man has been found guilty of murdering a young British soldier after a night out in his home town of Redruth.

Dave Curnow, 20, was attacked last September and died later in hospital. He was a member of 4 Rifles and was described as a brave and competent soldier by his commanding officer. He was one of the youngest British soldiers to serve in Afghanistan in 2013.

Today, a jury found Connor Hammond guilty of his murder. Another man, Liam Laing, had previously pleaded guilty to the same charge.

In what Mr Justice Dingemans described it as "a feral attack" Hammond was sentenced to life in jail and must serve a minimum of 16 years. Laing was also handed life, serving a minimum of 13.5 years.

Throughout the trial, the prosecution alleged that Mr Curnow was assaulted for no reason - that he was punched during a three minute assault by the two men, falling to the ground three times.
