Tom Daley asked fans to help him design a new Twitter cover picture but got more than he bargained for when internet pranksters bombarded him with hilarious photoshopped pictures.

The Plymouth diver was inviting entries from his 2.5 million followers, with the winning design to be announced on Wednesday:

But the idea backfired when he provided a photo for budding artists to use - and instead of serious entries, followers tweeted ever-more creative memes.

Among the entertaining edits were photos of the 21-year-old riding a horse with Vladimir Putin, hugging Donald Trump and flying on Aladdin's carpet.

Others nicknamed him "Divey McDiveFace," superimposed his pouting face onto a picture of Thomas the Tank Engine and replaced his body parts with loaves of bread.

After being inundated with the spoof entries, Tom saw the funny side, and acknowledged the creativity of many.

To enter the competition, tweet your edited Tom Daley photograph using the #COVERDALEY hashtag.
