90m deep mineshaft appears in back garden
A 90 metre deep mineshaft has opened up in a back garden, just feet from a house that's on the market for almost £250,000.>The shaft appeared unexpectedly as experts were checking for old mine workings in Scorrier, near Redruth. >Since it was discovered half the garage and the patio have disappeared into the hole which is said to drop approximately 90m until it hits water but it could be four or five times deeper.
The house in Scorrier is in an area with a history of mine workings. It's currently unoccupied but is up for sale. >Old shafts were capped by railway sleepers but some have rotted over the years, and a lot of the older mines haven't been marked on records.
The house with the 300ft hole is not far from a mine shaft that opened up next to the A30 last year, causing traffic chaos as engineers raced to repair it.
Structural engineers are deciding the future of the bungalow but Mr Dann says that cracks to the foundation means that it is likely to be uninhabitable.
