Devon 'Bloodbiker' honoured by Prime Minister
A Devon man who started the charity Freewheelers has honoured by the Prime Minister. Daniel Lavery has been named a Point of Light by David Cameron for his work within the charity.
The Devon Freewheelers are a team of 50 volunteer motorcycle riders who deliver blood and life-saving medical supplies in emergencies. The motorcyclists work with local hospitals in the county for the emergency transport of blood, human tissues for transplant service, urgent medications, donor breast milk and any urgent medical equipment that can be transported by motorcycle.
The service provided is free of charge and the charity receives no payment or funding - saving the NHS hundreds of thousands of pounds each year.
A Point of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers, people who are making a change in their community and inspiring others.
Each day, someone, somewhere in the country is selected to receive the award to celebrate their remarkable achievements.
45-year-old Mr Lavery, is the latest recipient and is thrilled to have been given the honour.
The Devonshire volunteer is the 459th winner of the Points of Light award.
