Stuart Pearce joins 'worst team in England' 14 years after retiring
England legend Stuart Pearce has come out of retirement to play for non-league Longford AFC who have been dubbed the 'worst team in England'.
The club play in the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division Two but they have no points whatsoever this season and have conceded an average of 10 goals per game.
Longford are rooted to the bottom of their league with a record of 19 games played, 19 defeats, scoring just three goals and standing on a goal difference of -180.
But they have now secured the signing of 53-year-old Pearce who comes out of retirement to try and turn things around.
Pearce won 78 caps for England in a 20-year career. He is most remembered for coming back from a devastating penalty miss against West Germany in the 1990 World Cup to score in a shoot-out at the 1996 European Championships against Spain.
He's been brought in during the January Transfer Window to help ‘fix’ the confidence and fortunes of Longford AFC, with the support of Direct Line as part of the insurer’s #directfix campaign.
