Exmouth pub stars in Oscar-tipped film 'The Big Short'

A pub in Exmouth has a starring role in The Big Short which has been nominated for five Oscars and hits cinemas across the UK today.

The film tells the story of an American financial trader who made a profit of £55 millions while using the free wi-fi at the Powder Monkey in Exmouth ahead of the 2008 global crash.

The critically acclaimed film, stars Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt.

The storyline revolves around investor Ben Hockett who predicted the 2008 crash, played by Brad Pitt. His character worked by using the wifi at his nearest pub, to negotiate with banks in America.

Hockett was on holiday in Devon at the time, but his company Cornwall Capital had hedged various bets against the banks and for four days he was able to cash in on those bets and secure various deals, earning him millions in the process.
