An ancient contraption called a 'thunder run' has been brought back to life to mark the 250th anniversary at the Bristol Old Vic.

The sounds and vibrations produced by the device aim to bring the sound of a real life storm to audiences.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Heavy balls are placed along wooden gutters - which makes the whole building vibrate - much to the astonishment of Georgian audiences centuries ago.

The unusual technique hasn't been used as a stage effect since 1942 - but the theatre says it still seems to convince modern ears.

The 'thunder run' is one of just three in the country and predates the others by 150 years.

It's been refurbished as part of the theatre's 250th anniversary celebrations.
